This is a small town with the usual array of shops, the odd coffee shop and not much else. However, it is set among some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. In the foothills of the Drakensberg, and close to the Northern Berg, it is a great springboard to visit the Amphitheatre or Rugged Glen. There are a number of attractive guest houses scattered around nearby, as well as the odd backpackers and, of course, the park accommodation. Among the many cultural activities, is a visit to Punch, whose real name is Sibusiso Mbhele. Punch is South Africa’s only living outsider artists, and his home, life and art are almost indistinguishable.

Winterton is on the R74, which is an alternative to the N3 between Harrismith and Estcourt. This road includes the steep, twisty and incredibly scenic Oliviershoek Pass, which is a very popular paragliding launch site.

Close by is the Sterkfontein Dam, which offers great fishing, particularly the endemic and feisty yellow fish.
