Beautiful, white-washed, gabled buildings grace the streets of this lovely old town, and, if you’re of a sufficiently curious bent, you will enjoy exploring the interesting museums and many national monuments. Close by is the Marloth Nature Reserve, the Swellendam Hiking Trail, the Breede River with its overnight canoe trips, and the Bontebok National Park and De Hoop Nature Reserve. Swellendam is an excellent base from which to do a day trip to Cape Agulhas, the most southerly point of Africa.

Accommodation in Swellendam ranges from a casual backpackers, and some inexpensive B&B’s to fine lodges. There are some lovely coffee shops and a few good restaurants.

Swellendam is just over 200km from Cape Town on the N2.
