© SA Tourism© SA TourismStellenbosch is the heart of the Winelands – if not geographically, spiritually. The town is renowned for its lovely old buildings, oak trees and water-furrows lining the quiet streets. But it’s not about the town, really. It’s the surrounding farms that are the major attraction. The Stellenbosch Wine Route is the oldest – and still the biggest – wine route in South Africa. As well as the almost obligatory wine tasting, there is great scenery, golf and the odd fun hike or horse trail. But if you’re of a more cultural bent you will revel in the many museums and historic buildings. Stellenbosch is about a half-hour drive from Cape Town.

The University of Stellenbosch is one of the biggest in South Africa, so the town has a great vibe with students wandering around town and spilling out on to the pavements from trendy coffee shops.
