Sea kayaking

© Jennifer Stern© Jennifer SternSea kayaks are very user-friendly boats that are designed specifically to be used on the ocean. As such, they’re relatively stable but quite sleek, too, so they’re not too sluggish, and they can surf. Cape Town offers the most variety of escorted sea kayaking trips, with interesting options on either side of the Cape Peninsula. Penguins, whales, seals and dolphins are quite regularly seen in some areas and are a definite added attraction. There are escorted day or multi-day kayaking trips on the Langebaan Lagoon on the West Coast, as well as kayak hire. Further north, there is good kayaking in the Cape Columbine Nature Reserve near Paternoster. Plettenberg Bay is a great whale and dolphin watching destination and paddlers on escorted trips are often visited by curious cetaceans.
There is an escorted trip off Swakopmund, in Namibia, where you are likely to see dolphins and seals, and there are multi-day trips off Inhaca Island in Mozambique, and off Madagascar.
