This tiny, rather insignificant town in the Transkei region of the Eastern Cape has only one claim to fame – it is the birthplace of Nelson Mandela. He has retired here and built a home which is visible from the N2. It is interesting to have a quick glance at his house as you drive past. If the flag is flying, he’s in residence. There is also a wonderful museum, which is an annex of the Nelson Mandela Museum in Mthatha.

The nearest airport is at Mthatha, about 30km east of Qunu, but there are only flights to and from Johannesburg. East London is about 200km to the west.
