Polokwane, the capital of Limpopo Province, was previously called Pietersburg. It is a medium-sized city with a definite air of serving an agricultural hinterland. The scenic and game-rich, malaria-free Waterberg is close by.

Although it is closer to Mokopane, the Makapans Valley is also easily accessible from Polokwane. The whole valley is rich in historical and prehistoric attractions, particularly the Makapans Caves and the Cave of Hearths.

Polokwane is on the N1, about 320km north of Johannesburg, en route to the Zimbabwean border post of Beit Bridge. The N1 is also an efficient route to take to get to the northern part of the Kruger National Park from Johannesburg. There is a small airport at Polokwane.
