This scenic, five-day trip on the Orange River, below the Augrabies Gorge, has some fun rapids but the emphasis is on relaxation. Bird life is prolific, with fish eagles, black eagles, herons, cormorants, swallows, kingfishers and many others regularly seen. The scenery is spectacular with plenty of bright green vegetation on the banks and, immediately behind that, stark arid mountains, with many interesting geological formations.
The rapids are mostly grade two, but can be grade three, depending on water level. As a rule, this is a rough camping trip, on which you sleep under the stars and carry all food and equipment in the boats. It’s a good option for families with children of about six and older.
