Mountain biking

There are an enormous number of great mountain bike trails in South Africa so, if you’re planning on doing your own thing, you’ll find somewhere to play on the outskirts of almost every city and town. The forestry companies have opened up most of the plantations and forests to bikers as well as hikers. Many farms with specially laid out trails and – often – comfortable self-catering accommodation, and some of the national and provincial parks are open to mountain bikers.

There are fabulous escorted trips all over South and southern Africa. Cape Town has a few, including a wine tasting trip and a visit to Cape Point. The Garden Route, with the iconic Harkerville Forest, has a couple, and there is even an escorted bike tour in Kruger National Park. You can rent bikes in most centres, and you’ll find a bike shop in almost every town.
