This small town has become one of those fashionable little places where rat-race refugees can take a break within easy driving distance of the city – in this case, Cape Town. It’s an architecturally fascinating place and is considered to be the best preserved example of a 19th century Cape town. There are a number of wineries nearby, the Breede River “wine route” paddle, is close by, and McGregor is home to a number of ‘’garagistes’’. The Vrolijkheid Nature Reserve is a great place for a ramble, and there is a scenic and not-too-challenging overnight hike from Greyton, on the other side of the Riviersonderend Mountains.

McGregor is about 200km from Cape Town, which has the closest airport.
