Marine animals

©James Boyce©James Boyce Although Africa is best known for large terrestrial mammals, there is so much more to see. Whether you’re interested in watching marine mammals from the surface, ticking off a range of unusual seabirds or spying on nesting turtles, you’ll find southern Africa’s long, beautiful coastline offers the opportunity to see an enormous range of marine life. But for a marine animal sensory overload, there is nothing to beat the annual sardine run.

The best way to see a variety of marine animals, of course, is to dive but, for non-divers who’d like to get an idea of what our wonderful undersea environment is like, there are aquariums in the major coastal cities. Shark cage diving boats offer a good view of white sharks even for non-diver.
