This small town is only about an hour’s drive from Johannesburg, so it is a favourite weekend escape for hassled urbanites. It’s a quiet little place and – quite honestly – the town itself is not much. Everything seems to happen just on the outskirts. And, to confuse matters – there is Magaliesberg. Now Magaliesburg is the town, and Magaliesberg is the surrounding mountain range – or the whole area. You will certainly be forgiven for being confused on this one. But whatever you call it, and wherever you draw the line, it’s a lovely area just littered with art and craft venues, great restaurants, cosy coffee shops, wacky pubs, comfy guest houses and outrageous adventures, including a tree-top tour. The hiking part of the Magaliesberg is a drive of more than an hour from the town of Magaliesburg, so be warned.

Magaliesburg is about 100km west of Pretoria, and the nearest airports are Lanseria and - a bit further away - OR Tambo in Johannesburg.
