© Jennifer Stern© Jennifer SternNestled on the edge of the large and sheltered Langebaan Lagoon, this town is a very popular weekend destination. The lagoon offers fun paddling, sailing and snorkelling and is one of the premier windsurfing and kite-surfing destinations in the world.

Accommodation ranges from campsites to comfortable guest houses, and most appetites can be satisfied at the few restaurants that range from casual beachside beer and burger spots to quite sophisticated eateries. The West Coast National Park borders one side of the lagoon, which harbours tens of thousands of migratory waders in summer - and a good selection of birds throughout the year as well. The park - and the whole area - is reknowned for its wonderful spring flowers that spread in a colourful carpet right to the water's edge or to the horizon.

The nearest airport is Cape Town International, about an hour’s drive away.
