Kloofing or canyoning

©Jennifer Stern©Jennifer SternKloofing, or canyoning as it is called in some other parts of the world, involves following a river gorge – or kloof – by means of walking, boulder-hopping, swimming, jumping, sliding and abseiling. It’s pretty strenuous and is most definitely a wet activity. It’s also relatively high risk so – unless you’re a mountain expert – it’s a good idea to do this with a knowledgeable person. There are a number of escorted kloofing trips, particularly in the mountains of the Western Cape, the Drakensberg in KZN and the Magaliesberg in the North West Province.

Because you get really wet, kloofing is a summer activity.
