Pretty much in the middle of nowhere, this high-lying, well forested area is perfect for people who just want to get away from it all. There are a few hotels and a backpackers, but the best bet for accommodation here is to rent a cottage. The walks are wonderful, with deep forests, tinkling streams and dramatic waterfalls. Legend has it that it is in these tangled forests that JRR Tolkien (who was born in Bloemfontein, incidentally) got his inspiration for Middle Earth.

Hogsback is an easy drive of about an hour and a half from East London and is very close to the Fort Hare campus at Alice.
