Fitness & exercise

Second only to good eating habits, regular exercise is the most effective way of ensuring good health. So, while you definitely want to relax and kick back a bit while you’re on holiday, you certainly don’t want to veg out completely. Of course, if you’re doing a hiking trail, river trip or mountain biking, the exercise part pretty much takes care of itself, but if you’re just doing the standard tourist thing of beaches, game reserves and museums, you may need to devote a bit of time to keeping off the extra kilos that are bound to creep on with all the good food.

You’ll probably find that your hotel or lodge has some form of mini-gym, even if it’s just a treadmill and a stationary bike, but you may want more. You could join a running or walking programme for a short while, utilise the services of a personal trainer or join a yoga, Pilates, dance or other class. Another really fun way to get and stay fit is in a climbing gym – they’re not just for real climbers. And, of course, if you’re a local, you may want to find a good resource that you can make part of your daily fitness regime.
