© Jennifer Stern© Jennifer SternThe small West Coast fishing town of Elandsbaai is well known among Cape Town surfers who regularly head up there on wave pilgrimages. But there is more. The area is rich in rock art, and the bird life on the nearby Verlorenvlei is fantastic. In spring, the flowers are typically outrageous with many bulbs growing in the sandy dune areas. It’s not a well developed tourist area, and is only reached by dirt road but it’s a worthwhile stop for the more adventurous traveller. One of the major attractions here is the rather rough and ready but very atmospheric beach restaurant.

Elandsbaai is about three hour’s drive north of Cape Town.
