© Jennifer Stern© Jennifer SternIf you’ve never gone caving you may not understand the lure of the heart of darkness. Part of the attraction is going where none, or at least few, have gone before, but the main reason cavers keep coming back for more is that caves are incredibly beautiful. Huge, glistening stalactites and stalagmites abound, tiny delicate crystal structures reflect the light of your lamp, iridescing with every colour of the spectrum, and the silence is broken only by the steady “drip drip” of yet another spectacular natural sculpture continuing its thousand-year formation. If you want to get seriously involved in caving, contact one of the caving clubs.

Most caves are inaccessible to a greater or lesser degree but there are some that are open to the public, and there are a few guided caving excursions.
