On Route 62 and on the edge of the Karoo, this little country town has so much going for it. A few good wineries and a very informal and inexpensive hot spring resort attracts visitors, and the cute coffee shops and a rather unusual landmark pub make this an excellent choice for a break from driving. The Karoo has, for many years, been a very underrated destination in terms of game – probably because most of the game that would have been here has been replaced by sheep. But this is changing. A relatively recent game reserve and wellness centre promises to put this little town on the safari map as well as offer visitors yet another unique, malaria-free game-viewing experience. Barrydale is a drive of about three hours from Cape Town. The Tradouw Pass (R324) is a spectacularly beautiful mountain pass linking Barrydale on the R62 with the N2 between Swellendam and Heidelberg.
